Spills happen. What you do in the first few minutes can make a big difference to the result. Here is what to do until a professional arrives.
Do this first
- Blot, do not rub. Press a clean white cloth or paper towel on the spill to soak up as much as you can.
- Work from the outside in so the stain does not spread.
- For water-based spills, dab with a little plain cool water and keep blotting.
- Test any cleaning product on a hidden spot first.
- Let the area air dry in a well-ventilated room.
Please avoid
- Scrubbing hard, which can damage fabric and push the stain deeper
- Soaking mattresses or couches, as too much water can leave marks and slow drying
- Strong chemicals or bleach on upholstery
- High heat such as a hairdryer, which can set some stains
